The Charlotte 49ers were looking for a happy ending to what had been an up and down, sometimes good but sometimes frustrating non-conference schedule. They did just that on Education Day.
In front of several thousand kids from local schools, the Niners turned a relatively close game into a blowout by dropping UNC Wilmington, 78-57.
This game may have been a little too close for comfort for the Niners (6-7), who led 56-44 with 11:06 left in the second half against a team that entered the game just 1-12 and having dressed only seven players all year. But a 7-0 run spanning nearly two and a half minutes put the game away as the Seahawks only scored four field goals over the last 7:31.
Tori Carter scored 16 points off the bench to lead all players. Alexis Alexander and Kira Gordon combined for 15 rebounds as Charlotte held a 46-28 edge on the boards, including 24-12 on the offensive glass. They outperformed the visitors by a 3-1 margin in both assists (18-6) and fast break points (12-4) while scoring 21 points off of 15 Seahawks turnovers.
Next up is Conference USA play for the Niners, as Old Dominion visits Halton Arena Wednesday night for a 7pm tip.
