It’s the final non-conference game of the season for the Charlotte 49ers as they welcome North Carolina A&T to Halton Arena tonight (7pm, WCCB-TV). Doubtless a few Aggies fans will be making the trek down I-85 to catch the contest this evening, which is also A&T’s final non-league matchup before diving into MEAC play. Here’s three things you need to know before tipoff:
–The Aggies enter tonight’s game 3-10 after a 66-63 loss to Georgia Southern last Saturday. Lamont Middleton registered 25 points (8-23 from the field) and six rebounds in that one.
–A&T has a trio of players that they primarily depend on for scoring. Middleton, a senior, leads the way (17.9), with classmate Richaud Pack (16.5) and sophomore Bruce Beckford (12.5) getting it done as well. Beckford is the team’s leading rebounder with 7.0 per outing.
–Cy Alexander took over before the 2012-13 season and promptly led the team to its first NCAA Tournament since 1995. Entering the MEAC tournament as a six seed (with a record of 15-16, 8-8 in league play), they won four straight to clinch the conference title and an automatic bid to the Big Dance. There, they beat Liberty (in the First Four) before a 31-point loss to eventual national champ Louisville.
Bonus points: A&T has yet to win a road game this year. They’re 0-9 away from the Corbett Center…It’s a homecoming for freshmen Steven Burrough (Harding) and Myles Jenkins (Olympic). Burrough has played in all but one of A&T’s 13 games this year (one start) and averages just over six minutes a game, while Jenkins has barely seen time just yet.
