Charlotte 49ers flex 2nd half muscle, tame LA Tech 85-61

The Charlotte 49ers turned a 32-30 halftime lead into a blowout, outscoring Louisiana Tech 53-31 in the second stanza to run away with a 85-61 victory over the Lady Techsters. Charlotte improved to 5-4 in Conference USA play and ended a two-game losing streak in the process.

This one was close at the break, but solid rebounding and timely defense, mixed with 55.9% shooting in the second half, helped Charlotte put this one away. They crushed LA Tech on the boards, 48-31 (17-12 on the offensive glass), while holding the hosts to just 29.4 shooting down the stretch. The Niners were 8-18 from beyond the arc as Hillary Sigmon and Ciara Gregory combined for 7 of those 14 shots. Meanwhile, Ny Hammonds ended the evening with five assists, giving her 442 for her career and tying her for the program record. She should break it when the Niners visit Marshall this weekend.

Hammonds, Sigmon and Gregory each dropped 14, with Gregory’s output a career best in her short tenure with the team. Only three LA Tech players that saw the court (LuLu Perry, Chrisstasia Walter and Whitney Frazier, who combined for 45 of their team’s 61 points) scored more than six points thanks to Charlotte’s stifling defense.

Charlotte visits Marshall on Saturday to end their weekend road swing. Tip for that one is set for 1pm in Huntington.
