High Point walks off with 4-3 win over Charlotte 49ers in 11

The 2014 season didn’t start the way the Charlotte 49ers would have liked.

Spencer Angelis stroked a two-out run scoring single in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the High Point Panthers (1-3) their first victory of the season, a 4-3 walkoff win over Charlotte.

It was a back-and-forth affair throughout as teams exchanged leads throughout the course of the contest. Charlotte struck first in the top of the 3rd as Brad Elwood brought Des Roberts in from third base on a single to right. But Kyle Brandenburg knotted things up for the home team in the 4th as his RBI single scored Cody Manzella to make it 1-1. Zach Jarrett got it back in the top of the 5th with his first career RBI to put Charlotte ahead 2-1, but a RBI double by Blake Hutton tied it once more. Josh Green put High Point up 3-2 in the bottom of the 7th on a wild pitch by Nate Traugh; Charlotte would knot it up again on Mikal Hill’s first RBI in a Charlotte uniform in the the top of the 8th. It would stay that way until the 11th as High Point broke through for the victory.

Freshman Bailey Brown pitched two innings of hitless, scoreless relief to pick up his first career win. Hunter May (1.2 IP, two hits, one earned run) was saddled with the loss.

For Charlotte, Zach Jarrett had quite a start to his career: 4-6 with an RBI. Grant Dunnegan was 2-4 on the afternoon. Loren Hibbs decided to start four freshmen today (Jarrett, T.J. Nichting, Logan Sherer, Eric Eason) and they combined to go 4-16 on the day; minus Jarrett’s output that dropped to 0-10. It’s only game one, so we’ll see how they develop throughout the season.

Charlotte hosts Canisius in a weekend set at The Hayes beginning Friday at 4pm.
