Will the streak for the Charlotte 49ers finally end at East Carolina?
The losing skid stands at five as the Niners travel to take on the Pirates, who have kept their ship in shape at home lately–winning their last three at Minges Coliseum including a victory over LA Tech. Here’s three things you need to know going into tonight’s matchup (7pm, Fox Sports 1):
–The Pirates enter this one as the third-highest scoring team in C-USA (74.6) and allow 70.9 a contest (11th in the league). They lead the league in free throw shooting (71.5%) and are fifth in field goal percentage (44.7%). But their bread and butter is the three point shot: their 36.4% is tops in the league over Charlotte, with their 8.36 makes per outing pacing the rest of the conference.
–For the second time in a row, the Niners face a potential conference player of the year candidate in Akeem Richmond. The senior, the program’s leader in threes made, averages 18.1 points a game (second in the league). His 4.46 makes from behind the arc is tops in C-USA as he shoots 11.5 per game on average. Freshman Brandan Stith (a Charlotte offer) leads the team in boards with 6.9.
–Here’s how tight things are in the middle of the conference. Charlotte is tied with three other teams (North Texas, FIU and Florida Atlantic) for 9th in the conference standings, but with victories over all four teams, they hold the tiebreaker. (FIU is banned from postseason play due to APR violations). The top nine teams get a first-round bye in the tournament while the top four receive a double bye all the way to the quarterfinals.
