Ny Hammonds’ impact on the Charlotte 49ers has been tangible throughout her four seasons on the team. But there’s one thing missing from her successful career: a trip to the NCAA tournament.
The senior point guard looks to help her team (13-13, 7-6 C-USA) get a step closer to that goal as they host the Marshall Thundering Herd tonight at 7pm–Senior Night–inside Halton Arena.
Hammonds will depart as the program’s all-time assist leader, but exactly how many she will leave with is still pending. She added 14 to that total (as part of the program’s second triple-double in history) to put her at 472 for her career and 30 clear of Markita Aldrige’s mark of 442. Even more impressive for Hammonds is that she racked up only 12 dimes in her freshman season (2010-11).
But given Hammonds’ achievements, she still hasn’t played in a NCAA tournament. And long after this game is over tonight, there’s still work to be done.
Charlotte stands at 7-6 in Conference USA and are tied with UAB for sixth, with visits to defending league champ Tulsa (Wednesday) and the aforementioned Blazers (Friday) wrapping up the regular season before the scene shifts to El Paso for the league championship. There is precedence for the sixth seed winning it all: as early as last season, in fact, when sixth-seeded tournament host Tulsa hoisted the trophy as they marched their way to the league’s automatic bid.
Hopefully for Hammonds and her teammates, the journey–though it may vary from the Golden Hurricane’s last year–will lead to the desired destination and truly give the Concord native the sendoff she deserves.
