As first reported by the Charlotte Observer’s David Scott, Charlotte 49ers strong safety Martay Mattox has been dismissed from the team for violation of team rules.
What those rules violations were aren’t known, but the loss of Mattox is big for the Niners. A former South Carolina signee who was offered by Maryland and South Florida, he led the team with 85 tackles while adding a pair of interceptions. Mattox’s dismissal comes just days before spring practice starts for the Niners on Tuesday.
It’s been a long ride for Mattox thus far. He enrolled with the Gamecocks in January 2011 before departing that December after barely any playing time, if any at all. After spending time with East Mississippi Community College, he then signed with Charlotte in February 2013.
Mattox isn’t the only player to run into disciplinary issues this year. Back in January, Alan Barnwell was picked up for possession of drug paraphenelia and for driving with a revoked license. The extent of how Barnwell will be disciplined will be announced soon, coach Brad Lambert told Libby Weihsmann of the Niner Times today.
No disciplinary action has been taken yet in regards to Alan Barnwell's arrest. Lambert said a decision will be coming soon.

Pick Axe Digest will continue to pass along updates as they become available to us. Unfortunately, a young student-athlete making a bad choice is a reality, and hopefully Mattox will learn from this experience going forward.
