The other shoe looks to have dropped in the matter of Charlotte 49ers running back Alan Barnwell. Turns out, he wasn’t the only one that was in trouble, though.
Within the past hour, the Charlotte Observer’s David Scott reported that Barnwell has been suspended for his January transgressions. But there was more:
We knew punishment was pending for Barnwell, but what we didn’t know was that Caldwell and Gent were in hot water themselves. However, Pick Axe Digest has learned that Gent was arrested on Sunday for simple assault, a misdemeanor, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg County Police Department’s public arrest records. The reason for Caldwell’s suspension is not known.
Barnwell was the team’s second leading rusher with 636 yards on 133 carries and five touchdowns. Caldwell registered 55 tackles (fifth on the team) including a tied-for-team-best 9.5 tackles for a loss as well as two sacks. Gent appeared in 10 games, picking up a single tackle.
This comes days after leading tackler Martay Mattox was kicked off the team for a team rules violation of his own. There’s no further details on that, but it appears his actions were far more serious than what Gent, Barnwell and Caldwell did.
We’l keep you posted on anything else we find out.
