After a six-day break, the ninth-seeded Charlotte 49ers hit the floor for the first time in the 2014 Conference USA tournament, taking on the eighth-seeded UAB Blazers in the last game of the second round at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso. Charlotte is looking to capitalize on a small bit of momentum gained over the last couple of games, but still is stinging from that six-game lull in February.
How they got here: The Niners lost six in a row before winning two straight coming into the tournament. UAB’s conference record was equal that of Charlotte’s, but held the tiebreak due to their head-to-head victory.
Regular season matchup: UAB topped the Niners 64-62 when the two teams met at Halton Arena on February 22. Chad Frazier had 16 and C.J. Washington dropped in 14 for the Blazers, while Pierria Henry scored 16 in a losing effort.
Who to watch for on UAB: The aforementioned Frazier. He was third in scoring average during the regular season (17.7) and fifth in assists (4.33).
Winner takes on: Top-seeded Louisiana Tech in the quarterfinals tomorrow night around 10:30.
