Charlotte 49ers basketball: Men shoot past UAB in C-USA Tournament; women ousted by LA Tech

It was a successful evening for the Charlotte 49ers’ men’s basketball team. For the women, it was a different story.

MBB: (9) Charlotte 80, (8) UAB 70
The Niners used 7-11 shooting from downtown to jump out to a 46-33 lead at halftime. Charlotte cooled off a little in the second half, shooting 44% in the stanza as compared to a blazing 53.3% in the first half, but they were too much for the Blazers on this night.

UAB, meanwhile, was without two of its starters–Rod Rucker and C.J. Washington–and it showed: the Niners out rebounded the Blazers 30-27. Chad Frazier, forced to shoulder much of the load, was 7-17 from the field for 19 points.

Meanwhile, for the Niners, they came out firing. Denzel Ingram was a perfect 4-4 from long distance (part of his 18 points) and Ben Cherry added a pair of threes in the first half as Charlotte separated themselves from the eighth-seeded Blazers. Terrence Williams also had a strong showing, chipping in 16 points as five Niners finished in double figures. They ended with 49.1% shooting despite just 18-30 from the free throw stripe.

Next up: top seeded Louisiana Tech at 10:30.

Also moving on: (7) Tulane, with a 66-61 win over (10) North Texas. They’ll take on second-seeded Tulsa…(6) Old Dominion surged past (14) Marshall, 73-58, and will play (3) Middle Tennessee in the quarters…(5) tournament host UTEP topped (12) ECU 77-68. The Miners take on (4) Southern Miss.

WBB: (14) Louisiana Tech 64, (6) Charlotte 55
It was another one-and-done in the conference tournament for the women’s team as they couldn’t stem a late charge by the Lady Techsters.

The game was tied at 53 with 2:27 left following a Lefty Webester jumper. Then LA Tech went to work–scoring the next nine points to go up 62-53 with 53 seconds left, a deficit the Niners would not erase.

Ny Hammonds had a game-high 18 in the losing effort; Webster ended with 5 points and 10 rebounds. Whitney Frazier and Kelia Shelton’s 15 points led five Lady Techsters in double figures.
