The Charlotte 49ers hope their stay in the Conference USA tournament is at least a day longer. They’ll have to topple the top seed in order to do that.
The Niners take on the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs in the final quarterfinal game of Thursday, with the winner taking on (4) Southern Miss tomorrow afternoon on CBS Sports Network.
How they got here: The Niners topped a depleted UAB team last night, winning 80-70 on the strength of 7-11 three point shooting during the game. LA Tech has been waiting as they received a double-bye to the quarterfinals by virtue of being one of the league’s top four seeds.
Regular season matchup: LA Tech took the regular season contest between these two teams in Ruston, defeating Charlotte 80-60 on January 23. Alex Hamilton scored 22 points on 10-13 shooting from the line, while Speedy Smith dished out 13 assists. The Bulldogs forced the Niners into 24 turnovers while committing just 14 of their own.
Who to watch for on LA Tech: Hamilton, who averages 14.5 points a game, and Raheem Appleby, who missed time due to an ankle injury and didn’t play in the Bulldogs’ victory over the Niners in January. Smith averages about eight dimes per game to just 2.43 turnovers.
Winner takes on: Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles defeated both teams in the regular season–LA Tech 80-71 and the Niners 81-64.
