The season is about a week away, so it’s time to break down the 49ers schedule this fall. The first four games offer a chance for Charlotte to start hot, but the back half of the schedule will be more challenging.
In the first four matchups, Charlotte will take on Campbell, Johnson C. Smith, N.C. Central, and Elon. Those teams had a combined 15-31 record in 2013, so the opportunity is there. The 49ers beat Campbell 52-7 in 2013, but lost to North Carolina Central 40-13. Central went on to finish the year with a similar record as Charlotte’s at 5-7, so that should be an interesting matchup.
The fifth game is where things get tricky, when they take on Charleston Southern. CSU began 2013 winning seven straight, and finished the year with a 10-3 mark. Other notable games are Coastal Carolina on November 8th and Wesley on November 15th. The 49ers lost to both of those teams last season, and it will be tough playing them in back-to-back weeks.
Coastal Carolina made it to the quarterfinals of the FCS playoffs before losing to North Dakota State, so that could likely be the toughest game on the schedule this season.
There are certainly some intriguing matchups on this 49er schedule, but we could see improvements this year. In its first football season since the start-up, Charlotte managed a 5-6 mark a year ago. Seven of the 11 games are against teams that finished .500 or worse last season.
Plus, they get Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina, and Wesley College at home, three teams that finished well in 2013. We will know more after the first game, but it appears that Charlotte could improve that win mark this fall.
